University of Alabama – National Racquetball Champions

April 2nd, 2007 by Geoff Thomsen

The University of Alabama became the next school to earn the title of National Racquetball Champions this weekend in Tempe, AZ at the 2007 USA Racquetball National Intercollegiate Championships.  Alabama and Men’s Team Champions Colorado State University have had a successful history at this event, but the women at Arizona State University proved to be the upset team of the weekend capturing their first Team Title.

On the individual finisher front, Ben Croft earned his third consecutive title, while Kim Irons “came out of no where” on the women’s side to claim her spot on the USA National Team.

University of Alabama repeated its 2005 performance by winning the overall team championships at the US National Collegiate Championships.  Perhaps the most surprising result was the victory by Arizona State University in the the women’s team championship. Although the number 1 player from Arizona lost early in the tournament the well balanced team placed in all the other 5 womens divisions.

As expected Colorado State university won the men’s team championship anchored by Ben Croft (#1) and Mitch Williams (#2).

Once again coach Tim Miller showed that small Division II schools can do well by not only winning the Division II title but also placing third in the overall team title.

Ben Croft maintained his place on the US Team by easily winning the men’s number 1 championship and Kimberly Irons survived a tough battle against Jesi Fuller to win the womens #1 title.
